Sure it's probably so basic a 4 yr old could work it out but I can't!

How do I make titles for columns appear in the grey bits at the to
instead of A, B, C etc

Really?

I'm sure I've seen it done. Is this definite?

In that case. Can I start the numbering at the 2nd row so that I kno
exactly how many entries I have on my spreadsheet

Elwood,

You will have to fake both the row and column headers in Row 1 and Column 1, the hide the real headers in Tools>Options, select B2 and do Window>Freeze panes. Your data will then begin in *real* B2, which may make formulas difficult to read.

There may be other options, depending on why you want to
change the column headings. If it's so you can see the
headings even when you're scrolled way down the list, you
can Split the window and Freeze panes. If it's so you can
use use the headings instead of the letters as references
in formulas etc, you can Name the range.

If customizing the heading is the end in-and-of itself,
you're stuck, but if it's a means to an end, there is
probably an alternate solution.
