Back with a Header problem again (Word 2000). I have a cover letter and
two-page resume, with no header on the letter and a header showing on
the second page of the resume. I believe the two parts are properly set
up to separate headers, but I can't get the paragraph mark (w/ blank
line) on the first page of the resume to disappear like it usually
does. What should its presence be telling me about my header setup?
Thanks,

Gene Goldenfeld

If you have header text in any part of the document, you will see an empty
paragraph in any empty header. This can be annoying but will not print or
affect the document layout.

Hi Gene

It sounds as though your header setup is done correctly. The fact tha
the paragraph marker and blank line are on the first page are normal.
guess this is Word's way of showing an 'active' (but in this case
blank) header

Suzanne,
I wasn't clear enough. I'm not talking about the paragraph mark per
se -- I know that can't be deleted -- but that it's showing after I
close the headers bar. That one does affect the document layout. I'm
trying to figure out why that's happening this time. Thanks,

Gene

It shouldn't affect the document layout provided the header margin is
smaller than the top margin and there is no Space Above/Below the header
paragraph.

From what I can tell, it clearly does -- 0.2" extra at 12pt Times
Roman. One way to limit the damage is to reduce the font size of the
paragraph mark. I'm wondering if having a remaining paragraph mark is
the upshot of creating a document with separated headers. Thanks,

Gene

What are your top margin and header margin settings?

It was at .35/.33, but I just tried .35/.3, .4/.3, .5/.3, and found no
difference. There's no space above the header.

Gene

Well, there's your problem. Except for .5/.3, you've allowed only 0.1"
between header margin and top margin. A single line of 12 pt TNR at default
line spacing is about 14.4 pts, which equals 0.2". So even .5/.3 is cutting
it close.

For a long time I've cut it close w/o problem. But just to check I
changed it to .75/.33, and the paragraph mark is still there. It seems
what's causing this lies elsewhere. Have to experiment some more.

Gene

I think we've already established that the paragraph mark is still going to
be there. You can't do anything about that. But unless it's affecting the
layout of the document, it will not do any harm. You claimed that it was
affecting the layout of the document.
