I am migrating to a laptop. I set up my email account on the laptop but the
test message was rejected with the error 'header forgery attempt'. I am
running Vista. What to do?
Claudette

The virus scanner is not scanning outgoing mail, and the email address is
correct.
The error in the test account settings reads: Send test email message: The
server responded:554 5.7.1 Header forgery.

Thank you,
Claudette

Who rejected it? Do you use an antivirus scanner to scan outgoing email?
Do you have the email address typed correctly?

Did you use the e-mail address for your account in the E-mail field in
the account you defined within Outlook? Some e-mail providers require
that you announce the same e-mail address in your e-mails as is the
e-mail address through the account you use to send the e-mail. That is,
the e-mail you claim is you in your e-mail must match the e-mail address
for your account. This would eliminate, for example, a customer of
Earthlink from claiming their e-mail address was at Hotmail.

What did the unindentified e-mail provider say when you asked them what
their error code meant?

Is both your version of Win & Office updated with critical updates?
Is your server provided by an ISP or are you hosting your own mail server?
And if you open outlook using the safe switch
Start>Run
Outlook.exe /safe
And send a test msg to yourself, is it successful, both in send & receive?

Problem solved, an account with another ISP worked fine, so I knew the
problem was with the settings for the ISP server, I had not set the advanced
settings correctly. Thank you for your help.
