HDMI vs component

My nephew and I were hooking up a DVD player to his TV. It was a
little unclear which port was marked what. One of the ports was
labeled HDMI. Since we were using a component cable for the hookup, I
said it couldn't be HDMI. I told him he could just figure out where
it was connected by trial and error with the remote.

He said that he had had another console in the past that used
component and it was marked HDMI. Since he no longer has that
console, there is no way to really check. I suggested it may have
been marked HD but he insists that it was marked HDMI.

This par is vague and ambiguous.

So is this one. And neither contain a specific question.

How about clarifying both of those paragraphs and then present a clear
and unambiguous question. That way one won't have to guess at what you
are saying or what you are asking by implication.

Here's something that may be helpful about 'ambiguous' component and/vs
composite analog video connectors. And it would be useful to know if
you are US or Europe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_cable
1 Analog component video
1.1 RGB analog component video
1.2 Luma-based analog component video
1.2.1 Connectors used
2 International standards
3 Component versus composite

After posting I found some images on Google. It does show cables with
the connections on one end to be component and HDMI on the other. This
would explain why he selected HDMI from his TV when using his other
game console. His game console must have included a cable of this
type.

Since I was connecting his DVD player with component on both ends, I
told him that which ever input his TV had, it would not be one labeled
HDMI.

I use a SVGA/HD15 and ancillary audio to include a laser-carrier
modulated S/PDIF source for 116dB output into a wet/dry mixer array on
acoustic references within standards due only the best of equipment.
But of course, my most recent pairing of an ART amp to 4-ohm Alexis
studio monitors (wet mixes are modulated and delivered entirely within
a duplicate system comprising another yet discretely worthy setup). A
superlative dimension might I add for having obtained the Alexis at a
third their present retail levels.

Other than that, is their an actual point to be made for HDMI?

May I? ... 'I just watch the stuff, (like I can play it if reading
music -FL), having naught beyond the necessary skills, though be what
they may, if not unworthily then so to critique and obtain a substance
perfunctorily obtained.' IMHO, of course. ...Were I write my whole
intent any clearer, by the most damnable gods, I should think I ought
to have to break down and buy myself one of these newfangled, handheld
computational devices -).
