HDD Size Issue

Just installed a Hitachi DeskStar 164.7Gb disk on my A7N8X-X -
Installed XP Pro but that displays total disk size as 128GB.

What has happened to the rest of my drive? I expected a small size
differential but not 36Gb!

Even at the XP installation screen not all the HDD is showing - so
it's probably not an OS problem. Could it be BIOS, or a faulty
platter?

Thanks

Check what bios identifies it as, im quite sure the motherboard can handle
disks of that size, however you need SP1 slimstreamed with your XP in order
to utilize the full size of disk during install. Otherwise it will show up
as 137GB (not 128).

In XP to enable harddrives larger than 137GB (which are 128GB formatted) you
have to install ServicePack1.

I had applied SP1 after formatting the disk and setting it the
partitions with with PM8, however the missing space didn't appear.
That was until I went into teh BIOS and changed the BIOS setting from
"Auto" to "LBA" then my missing 30Gb appeared in PM8!

Thanks all!

Once you install SP1, you should be able to extend the existing partition
into the free space using hte diskpart /extend command. See Help on this.

I don't recommend you bung all your eggs in one basket tho: C drive I always
keep for System and bung data elsewhere. Easier to defrag, scandisk and
backup that way.

Have a look at this solution on the Maxtor site:

https://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...lh_adp.php?p_faqid=960&&p_sid=nzAuEBfh&p_lva=

or http://tinyurl.com/3ebpq

I have used this solution on a Win 2000 install sucessfully. Operating
system was installed on a 20GB partition and the rest was partitioned under
disk management once the patch had been run.
