I have an old hard drive i'm trying to put an OS on, but it has bad sectors
and is very erratic in holding onto data without corrupting it. is it at all
possible to quaratine those sectors so i can use the hdd?

Fdisk does not pick up the errors when i partition, but when i reboot and
start a format it gets stuck on "Trying to recover allocation unit xx, xxx"
This number changes every 12 hours or so!!! is it worth running it longer?

Any help would be appriciated..

Sounds like the drive is degrading quickly enough that it's not worth
fooling with, needs replaced.

Yep, I've just thrown away two 4gig Maxtors that had this problem. I hate
that.

As per other posts but hey,What the hell.

Download Maxtor's free,"Powermax".
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm
use it to blank the disk and it can repair even none maxtor drives.
Nothing to lose eh ;-)
I've done a couple of,"oldies" for schools and the less fortunate
among us :D
