Hi, I am not new to computers and would consider myself quite good with
the hardware side of things. My problem is that I have a new hard drive
to install on my computer and at the start up, the computer tries to
auto detect the hard drive but seems to get stuck doing so. I once left
it a whole 9 hours, came back and it was still trying to auto detect it.
Can anyone please aid me in my problem? Many thanks in advance!

You didn't say what interface you use with the HD -- EIDE? SATA? SCSI?

But, check the jumpers on your drive. If it is on an EIDE chain with
another drive, you may be able to use "cable select" on both drives, but
on many systems you must actually make one "Master" and the second one
"Slave". Are terminators required as with SCSI and do you have them
installed properly?

Your bios may not be able to handle that size, and is overflowing
some variable on the size report. If so you need one of 1) a new
bios 2) a hd bios drive replacement rom (microfirmware at
<http://firmware.com>) 3) a separate PCI drive card or 4) a smaller
drive.

The worst solution is the drive extension software that makes the
drive useless as anything other than a boot drive.

Is the cable OK, have You tried installing another one? Does the drive spin
up correctly? Does the drive work on another computer? How big is the drive
and do similar drives work OK on this computer?
