hdd partion resizing

hi.i have a 160gb hdd..its got three partions (all factory installed)..(C)
LOCAL DISK. 71.8GB....(D)BACKUP..68.4GB..(E)RECOVER..2.43GB...i store all my
music/pics on the (D) partion..and programs and every thing else on (C)...is
there any way of increasing the size of (D) using the free space on my (C)???
as (D) its just about full and i have 65GB free on (C)..Ii have a program
called PARAGON PARTION MANAGER (free with some pc mag..cant remember which
one),but have never used it...dont know if its agood program or not?...will i
have to formatt (c) or (d)..to increase the size?...mucho help appreciated...

You would need to know the version of the partition manager to know whether
it supported Windows XP or not and you need to make sure it is not just a
"demo version": 'All operations are available in virtual mode only - so you
can evaluate how the program looks like and how it represents your partition
configuration, try to perform operations virtually and feel how you can
change partition configuration with Partition Manager.'

However, it looks like, if you have a newer version and it is not a demo -
it would function okay. If it is a demo, it will function okay because it
does nothing.

Partition Magic is one of the better and most widdely used of applications
to do this - but you have to consider whether it is cheaper/better overall
just to buy a new hard drive and install it. I did find supposed OEM
versions of Partition Magic 8 for as low as $25+shipping/tax on
pricewatch.com - but I don't know about the sellers. But I also found 120GB
hard drives for $62+shipping/tax on pricewatch. Yeah - double+ the
difference but you also end up with something more than a product you will
likely use only once and that may screw up your system to a point where it
won't boot. (Partition Magic is a fine product, but even the documentation
warns you to backup before using it because what you are doing is, well,

If you're careful and keep track of what you're doing, you CAN
use XP to reformat the drive and not damage the Restore partition
you already have. BE CERTAIN TO BACK UP EVERYTHING FIRST!. What
you would end up with though is one drive to use plus your
Restore partition. Also, finding an os already existing, XP will
try to install to a drive other than C, so watch for that step to
come up. Be certain it's going to format the right dirve and
delete the right partitions.

Even if you do trash the restore partition, you'll still have a
backup to restore from. It will probably end up with the wrong
drive letter afterwards, but you can change that back in System
Admin.

I don't know what Paragon 'Partition Manager' is: But, it's NOT
Partition Magic! I noticed that's not real clear in another post
here. Partition Magic was owned by Power Quest, now Symantec,
and it's a good product.

Symantec's Partition Magic will let you move partitions around
pretty much at will as long as there is enough free space
available somewhere on the disk. Reliable in my experience, ymmv
so still back everything up first!

Pesonal opinion only: I wouldn't take a chance on free stuff
without checking it out carefully ahead of time at their
newsgroups, whatever support mechanism they have. Unless it says
it runs on XP, it probably won't work right or reliably on XP.

Are you sure you can't get enough space back by housekeeping and
Disk Cleanup/deletion features? You didn't mention how long
since doing any housekeeing chores of any kind; if it's never,
you have tons of wasted space on your drive.

I have not used it either, but see it recommended here now and again.
What I would use myself is BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com ($35
shareware - 30 day full functional trial)

You need one of these third party partition managers - the other is
Partition magic, but that gets expensive
