HDD not recognized

I'm working on a friend's computer that would show a black screen
during the boot. I inserted the vid card from my machine and I got
to the boot screen. The HDD could not be recognized when I tried to
reinstall WinXP Pro. I got a message about using diagnostic software
from manufacturer. The drive is a 40 GB Maxtor. Any ideas what's
causing the error? I know the drive is good. One other thing I tried
before the vid card sway was removing the battery for awhile. Could
that have affected the BIOS not recognizing the HDD?

Thanks for any help.

Check in the bios for the HD. If you don`t know the drive params, set it to
auto. If the bios can`t find it, the system won`t. bw..J

Thanks "old jon". I'll give that a shot.

Make sure you didn't knock the IDE cable to the drive loose or the power
connector..

Thanks John, I checked those, I even unplugged them and reinserted
them.

Have you possibly removed or added a drive on the primary IDE? Disconnected
or whatever! If so, your Primary Master in question may no longer be jumpered
correctly.

Hi Bob,
The computer had a 40GB HDD with XP installed. They wanted an upgrade
so I found a 200GB Maxtor for $90+rebates and installed it. I removed
the 40GB drive to install the 200GB.
Now they are getting a new computer and said I could have the drives.I
loaned the 200 GB to a co-worker to backup up his HDD. I reinstalled
the 40GB w/XP and now it won't boot. I have to wait to get the 200 GB
back before I try it again. Eventually I will put the 200GB in my own
computer. So in answer to your question I installed the 40GB to the
same cable that had the 200GB. It still should be set to Primary
Master.

Thanks for your time.
