Ok,

I used xp to format the drive (as part of a re-install)
and it is IDE. Autodetect in bios shows the drive as
there and gets the capacity correct. Please help, e-mail
me if you wish.

I got the same problem, and what I found out is that Ultra
ATA controllers are needed to let XP (Home or Pro)
recognize the Hard Drive and go on with the installation.

Unfornately for me, Win XP does not recognize the supposed
drivers from the manufacturer ECS and VIA.

Go get the drivers from your MOBO manufacturer and once the
Win XP setup is started hit F6 to install the drivers and
finish the installation. Hopefully it works for you.

Look for this file txtsetup.oem among .sys, .dll, .cat,
..inf.

Good luck
