I have tried to move my harddrive to my parents pc. Both
pcs are running XP. I want to take their harddrive out and
replace it with mine. I have connected it exactly as
theirs was with no success. I have also connected it
various ways such as switching from master to slave as
well as changing the IDE port. In other words cable
connections and jumper settings are not the problem.
When the PC boots up I recieve a blue screen saying
something like "windows has detected a virus, if you have
installed new hardware, remove it. If you have installed a
new Harddrive you should run Checkdisk /F."
Checkdisk run, Norton antivirus run and no apparent
problems with my Harddrive. Both Harddrives have the same
specifications - same brand and both 80Gb. Any ideas as to
what is causing this?

Hi

After changing the HDD to your parent's PC, set it as master and connect it to the primary IDE channel. Do not connect other HDD as slave. Check ro ensure all connection is tightly and properly connected
Boot from the original XP CD to peform a repair installation of XP

First, boot into BIOS and set the CD-rom drive to be the first boot device then save and exit.
You can skip this step if the CD-rom drive has been set as the first boot device
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boo
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with the following

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

In your case, press ENTER

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8

You will then be taken to a screen with two options

****To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R. (You should choose this option

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC

This will bring you to a partition map where you can delete, create and format partitions
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation

****After the repair installtion of XP is successfully completed, you need to install SP1 and update all the patches

If the solutions didn't work. Try this! If it happens before loading Windows, may BIOS built in Anti Virus causes the error. Try disable it first! May be this can help! :-P

It's possible that because the systems were different in
terms of devices, that there might be a conflict with
drivers.
