HDD makes strange noises

Get a rubber tube and turn on the pc with the case open. Hold one end of the
tube near your ear, and move the other end around in the case until you
figure out where the noise is coming from. It might be from a fan(case fan,
power supply fan, or cpu heatsink fan) that needs lubrication or needs
to be replaced. it the noise is from the hard drive, then make sure all
your important information is backed up, as it might fail soon.

Hi,

I've got a problem with my harddisk, at least I think it is my harddisk that
makes such noises...

The noises are like a very high buzz, a never ending beep. Not very loud, but at
a frequency where it is VERY annoying. It's not even continuous. sometimes it
buzzes, sometimes it doesn't. Often, when it is buzzing, the frequency suddenly
gets higher and it seems to be more quiet.

If it is the harddisk, the problem would be a Seagate SATA 160GB with 7200 rpms;
does anyone know about a behaviour like this with that HDD?

Will do that tomorrow :)

I just bought it 2 months ago!

I have a similar noise here. When the screen is mainly filled with white and
I move the mouse around, the computer makes annoying (quiet) whistling
noise!

The pipe thing is an excellent suggestion - only as Avid has pointed out -
something do be done in private!!

I mean some windows on the screen that are large and white background - ie.
fill the screen with mainly white pixels. I don't think we have the same
cause, but it sounds like the same noise!
I _always_ have that problem. Actually I alwas have a lot of precesses
running and programs opened...

Anyway: The sound seems to come from the power supply. In
de.comp.hardware.laufwerke.festplatten (german newsgroup) a user
mentioned, that some PSUs by "Fortron" may get broken when using Seagate
SATA disks. Even when they don't get broken, they make at least some weird
sounds...
I don't have a Fortron PSU, I have one by Herolchi and haven't heard
ANYTHING about them. I just bought a cheap noname-PSU at that time...

That is interesting - I will try the pipe trick later and let you know where
the noise is coming from. I have a new power supply here Nexus 300w. It is
very quiet (along with the rest of my PC now), which is how I am able to
hear the new noise!

That Fortron-Hitachi relationship seems more like an urban
legend than truth, perhaps observed within a narrow band of
power usage that simply varied in an isolated
system/situation but could happen with any drives with *any*
PSU operating within a resonant frequency and having loose
coils or transformer.

Herolchi PSU aren't too bad though, they used to make a few
Antec models... or rather, Antec used to slap their label
on Herolchi PSU.

May be, I also read in other newsgroups about that problem with
non-Fortron-PSUs. The only constant device is alwys a 7200.7 SATA from Seagate,
but the noise definitely does *not* come from the HDD.

I hadn't had any problems yet, I think they aren't bad quality...
