Hi,
I am going to install an extra hard drive in my computer, it is a Hitachi
Deskstar 7K500, which is a 500gig SATA II drive. Will I be able to use it
as a 500gb drive or will I need to partition it, or is it better to
partition it. Thanks for any advice or help
Regards
Bob

Hi Bob. It depends on what your going to use it for, ie. Storage space,
Backups or Data.
Do remember, if you use it as one big lump, it would take days to
defrag it. Partitions are easier to deal with than one massive drive.
If tho` your doing video, the more space the better

Days? I don't thing so. Minutes. How many depends on how often it is done.

IMO, partition it.

Even if you are not going to use it immediately as a boot drive, partitioning 20
GB up front for a boot partition may give you the flexibility in the future if
your boot drive fails. Just leave the partition empty, or use it for the
pagefile.

After that, figure out if you will be using the rest of it for different
purposes. I would keep active data and apps on a single logical drive, and
backup and archive data on separate logical drives. Also, the archive stuff
then takes up the inner sectors that have slower access, keeping active stuff
away from the area.

Thank you. I felt bad for you if you were going to expect it to take days
so I HAD to respond. ;)

Would you be interested in telling us your motherboard's make and model, so
we can answer your question?
