HDD install question

This isn't a software question, but I'm hoping someone
might know the answer. I'm replacing the HDD in a laptop
PC, and I've noticed that the old HDD has a plastic
membrane attached to one side of it (the side with the
circuit board), but the new HDD doesn't have this membrane
(even though it has a similar circuit board). The
membrane is held on with some tiny bracketes and some
adhesive, but it could be removed. Is the membrane an
insulator or protective thing that needs to be removed
from the old HDD and attached to the new HDD prior to
installation of the new HDD?

Thanks.

Hi Doug,

I'd leave it alone myself. Some drives have a rubber cover over a small
hole where the atmospheric pressure is equalized. It might have
something to do with pressures changing when it heats up, but then
again, it may not.
