A 250gb SATA hard drive that I had connected as a slave (and had all
my data on) appears to have died/be dying. I just bought it last year
and expected my other, older drives to go before it. I have some of
my data backed up, but not all. When I attempt to access it in
Windows under My Computer, it recognizes it but hangs and then the
'drive not formatted' box pops up, asking if I want to format it.
When accessing it in DOS with partitioning software, the software
reads the partition table, and shows data on it, but if I try to copy
the drive to another drive it says "I/O error, cannot access drive".
I even ran the Windows XP setup CD on it to see if that recognized the
drive, but it didn't. Is there any hope?

Thanks.

did you check your device with chdsk? if not open up a command prompt
(cmd) and execute:
chkdsk c: /f /r
(change the drive letter accordingly)
is your harddisk making strange noises?
did you try a diagnostic utility that the harddisk vendor posts on
their homepage?

btw i once could recovery my data from a bad harddisk or bad partition
with "ontrack easyrecovery professional" software.

Some recovery software did the trick. Im amazed at how it shows the
drive loaded with bad sectors, yet I was able to recover all of my
data - or at least whatever got lost I didn't notice missing. The
drive is still vibrating and hot as can be, so its going straight to
the trash now that I have my files back.
