HDD/Drive Letter question

I just installed a second HDD on my system. I hooked it up, auto-recognized
in BIOS, then partitioned and formatted. It's now being recognized in My
Computer, but as two separate drives, F: and H:. When I partitioned the
drive, I allocated all available space to one partition and named it H:.
This strange mock drive called F: isn't being recognized in Disk Management,
but it's there in My Computer. It also says that both F: and H: have 114GB
of free space, but that would be 228GB of new space and I only purchased a
120GB drive. When I unplug the drive, F: disappears along with H:. Is the
8Mb XP uses for its System Volume information or whatever, is that being
given a drive letter assignment inadvertently? I just want one new letter
for my one new drive. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hey TouchNova, that's some information I don't remember seeing in our
original post. I don't recall you saying, or maybe I read it wrong, that
BOTH drive letters showed up as 114GB of space.
did you try partitioning and naming the drive F instead of H since it
appears you don't have a drive H?
Are F and H both showing up under Device Manager? Maybe you can delete a
ghost driver that is residing there.

Hey wojo,

I've learned that my original post was confusing to some, so I've updated
and reworded it. I actually think I've figured out my problem, and it's
pretty simple. When I create a new volume on the drive, I don't think that
I'm suppose to assign a letter, even though the default option selected when
that option screen appears in the New Hardware Wizard suggests that I should
call it H
:. If I select "Do not assign a drive letter", it seems to default properly
to F:, which windows recognizes automatically. I wonder if the error here
wasn't just the human element....ME! It messes you up though, when it
defaults to naming the drive something new, instead of windows essentially
saying, "Hey, we recognize your new HDD, we'll default the new volume to the
drive letter we've already assigned for you."

Thanks for all of your help on this one, wojo. I'll leave the configuration
as it is for now and see how it does.

Yeah that makes sense I didn't even catch it originally when you said you
assigned it to H. Caught that on the new post then the wheels started
turning. Good luck.
