HDD disappears after re-installing CDRW

I have win2Kpro on my system. It wouldn't allow me to use
my CDRW to burn discs. I flashed the firmware on the CDRW
thinking perhaps that was the problem. Still wouldn't be
recognized by programs as a CDRW. Thought it might not be
set up properly, removed it, checked the settings (slave
jumper) and reinstalled it. Now the system won't even
boot the hard drive. The floppy drive isn't working
either.

The burner is an Acer - 2001 model and was working fine in
my old computer (just rebuilt it) but hadn't tried burning
since I put in in the new box. Now I can't boot the
system at all. Yes... I've checked and rechecked all the
connections - everything is as before (when the cdrw would
read discs) all connections the same.

Anyone know why the HDD doesn't seem to be booting? My
floppy disk isn't working either for some reason... so
can't even use a startup disc to boot the hard way.
Installing w2kp was difficult in this faster system, had
to disable the L2 cache in order to load it at all. This
is rediculous!

HELP!

Hi,
If you put the floppy cable backwards it wont boot. If
you put he floppy power on wrong it wont boot. If you want
to find out remove floppy cable and power and then boot,
Why did you have to disable the l2 cache? never heard of
it before. Add the ide drivers for your motherboard also.
Bye

Never disconnected floppy cables, has nothing to do with
this. Been a PC tech for 10 years... didn't put any
cables on wrong. Windows 2Kpro wouldn't load with L2
cache, system read it too fast and missed files (it's a
2.6 GMHZ CPU with 1G Ram). Disabling L2 was the only way
to load all the files. Don't ask me why.. it's a windows
issue. As is the HDD problem, all hardware is new and was
running quite nicely until I tried to install a CD Burner.

Anybody else out there had these problems? Got some
actual advice for me?

In order I would check the following

Try CDR in another PC check that.
Try HD in another PC
Reinstall W2k and MB drivers
If no joy with those I would suspect the MB

Hope this helps

Sorry should add that you should check the HD and CDR cables when you are
trying in another PC, I have broken more than one 80 pin ribbon cable just
moving things around in the box (without realising the cable was bust

Hi,
Looks to me like the BIOS on the motherboard
isn't set up correctly. How many
HD's do you have? Will the computer boot if you remove the
CDRW? If so, can you uninstall all of the CDRW hardware and
try re-installing it? Again, each time you add or remove
a drive--HD or CD or DVD--you usually have to open the BIOS
and update the information there. It's usually not very hard.
Most new MB's have a feature that will auto-detect the drives
in it. Did you try this?

Good Luck.
