i have xp home edition, and when the computer is idle the hard drive is just
churning away with its light on...
what is this, and how to I change it? Is it the indexing service?

Also is there a way to get rid of XP always refreshing the desktop icons
when i switch resolutions or go in and out of games?

thanks in advance.

Turn of the Indexing service and the useless System
Restore. On a stand alone home machine neither are needed.
You have XP HE so you can find the NT Backup on your disk
in the valueadd\msft\ntbackup folder. Install NT Backup
and you will find it in your start\all
programs\accessories\system tools. Have fun.

Check that you have no viruses / spyware

Check Contol Panel / Scheduled tasks and make sure you have none
running

Your AV may be doing a virus check - some AV programs can be set to do
things only when system is idle.

You can switch off indexing service but it may not solve your problem

Ctrl/Alt/Delete and see what applications are running at the time -
this may give you a clue if there is something running that shouldn't
be.

Otherwise it is probably just XP doing it's housekeeping, like system
restore etc - don't worry about it.

Also don't worry about desktop refreshes - better to have that than
put up with resdidual crap on the screen.

I disagree with turning off indexing. What is the logic that it is not
needed only on a non-networked computer? Also, it will not cause a lot
of churning except when it is initially turned on unless there is a
very large amount of files being added/deleted/changed or a critical
shortage of disk space.

Are you connected to the internet when this happens? If so, you might
have adbots and/or other nasty, uninvited, and unknown processes
running the background.
