Pardon my technical ignorance, but here's the question:

I've just purchased a new Win 7 (64) system. The hard disk is a
ST500DM002-1BD142 interface is described as SATA-3 Motherboard is ASUS
M5 A78L. In my old machine, I have a 320gb Maxtor STM 3320820A
described as Ultra-ATA/100, used as a slave, which I could do with in
my new machine. Is this possible and how is it done please? The
connectors look different.

Regards and thanks in advance

On the Asus page showing the specs. for this motherboard at

I see:

"AMD SB710 controller :
1 x UltraDMA 133/100/66 for up to 2 PATA devices , navy blue"

So this should allow you to connect two such Maxtor drives,

In the picture, that PATA connector is at the front left of the board,
to the left of the SATA connectors.

But if your motherboard is in fact one of the M5A78L-M (mini-ATX)
variants, it looks as though none of those has the PATA connector. In
that case you could get a separate PATA controller that would plug into
a PCI (or perhaps PCIe) slot, or you could mount the Maxtor drive in an
external enclosure with a USB connector, but that will not be very fast.

But only if the motherboard doesnt have the PATA connector.

I dont think you can use as ATA is not used any more on new systems..

But only if the motherboard doesnt have the PATA connector.

It works even if the MB has a PATA connector. I had used the PATA
connector for the 2 ide CD drives.

Still have the SATA/PATA adaptor which was connected to the an ide
250 gb drive; the ide drive was used as a slave & had both a windows
partition as a "temp" drive & linux. Worked quite well until I decided
to install win7 which messed up the partition table badly on the
ide slave drive; wasn't able to access linux anymore but it turned out
to be more of a problem with the boot manager I was using (microsoft
changed things for booting).

Oh, the SATA/PATA adaptor was as a SATA I which was only at 1.5 ghz,
not the 3 ghz of SATA II or the 6 ghz for SATA 3. Not sure the price
if it is worth it now considering how low prices of hard drives are.

Check prices before doing anything. I think I paid around $30 for the
adaptor & my replacement 500 gig drive was less than $40 a couple
of years ago.

It is on that particular motherboard if he described it correctly.

This board has one ATA socket. Next time, maybe jst have a look
into the mainboard manual or on the vendor website?

True, didnt think to point that out.

Yeah, can be a problem with boot managers.

They have just doubled for some drives due to the flood fiasco in Thailand.

I wouldnt normally buy a drive that small anymore, and
the adapters are considerably cheaper than that now,
some for even $1 and quite a few for $5, you wont find
too many 500GB SATA drives for that now.
