sorry if this has been mentioned before but why does my hard driversound
slike its being constantly accessed by whatever program i never had this
problem on xp

i did a fresh install not an update it also sounds like my hard drive works
harder than it did on xp then it makes a sqealing noise then turns off then
back on again it runs at 7200 rpm and vista has rated my hdd as 5.3 for
performance so why does it sounds like its stuggling soo much

Hi, screvenant2005.

I have no idea about the squealing noise! But the constant accesses
probably is the Indexing going on in the background.

Indexing is supposed to stop immediately when you press a key or otherwise
start to use the computer, then start again when the computer is idle, but
its timing is not always perfect. This indexing might go on for several
days, depending on the size and content of your hard drives, and what
options you choose. To see the settings, click Control Panel | Indexing
Options. At first, you probably will see a number of items indexed, with a
message that Indexing speed has been reduced due to user activity. After a
few days, it should say Indexing complete and your hard drive activity
should be much less.

Defragmenting of the drive also occurs in the background, but is usually not
noticeable except for the blinking HD lights.

Hi,

A squealing hard drive is usually a sign of impending disaster. Download and
run a drive diagnostic tool on the system from the manufacturer, it may be a
candidate for replacement.

Hi, screvenant2005.

Indexing does just what the name suggests: It creates an index of all the
words in all the files on your hard drive. Well, not ALL. It normally
doesn’t look inside binary coded files, such as the operating system or
applications. But it tries to index all the text in all the files that you
might want to search when you are looking for something - like that article
on "searching" that you know is somewhere on your drive, but you can't find
it. Click the Vista Orb (formerly the Start button) and type "searching"
(without the quotes) into the Search box. When it works right, it finds all
the files with "searching" in them, and does it very fast. In Help and
Support, type "Indexing" into the Search box for details.

Yes, it can be stopped, but that probably is not the solution to your
problem.

As Rick said, the hard disk squeal is the FIRST thing you should take care
of! A dead hard drive - with ALL your stuff on it - could make everything
else unimportant. Its 5.3 rating doesn't matter much if it dies. :>(

Hi, Ron.

I don't know, but I see no reason why a defrag would require us to re-index.
