HD Specs?

Do you have any hints and tips for people looking to buy a new hard
drive? (I'd like to buy a new ATA/IDE drive for a machine running
Windows 2000, with an ABIT NF7 motherboard.)

What are the important specs to be checking?

I can buy these for about £30ukp:
ExcelStor Technology 80GB 7200rpm 2MB U100
ExcelStor Technology 80GB 7200rpm 8MB S300
Samsung 80GB U133 7200RPM 2MB

So what's the difference between U100, U133 and S300, and will I notice
that difference?

Is ExcelStor a reasonable make, or are they dogs?

This motherboard doesn't have SATA connectors, so I won't be buying those.

Warranty? (And how to get it when you need it).

Entierly differnt connector and interface. Needs an
SATA connecotr. No speed difference in practice.

According to Odie, they are rabid dogs with Cholera...
Nobody seems to really disagree about this, so better
stay away. Especially since Samsung is pretty good.

Actually, Excelstor produce some of the smaller drives for Hitachi.
Hitachi, which according to Odoriferous (yes, that's Odie)
are very good, about the best there is, even.
Excelstor also sell some of these drives under their own label.

That is those that are not in babblebot's killfile, that is.
Which makes him often repeat his usual stupidity because
he stuck his head in the sand at the time he was corrected.

Within certain parameters, yes.

And, similarly, there are Seagate models I cannot recommend.

Although Excelstor produce drives for Hitachi, they are also reknowned
(to me, anyhow - you don't have the knowledhe or foresight) for
producing drives that have been "cut" (you probably wouldn't understand,
Folkert) and relabelled as new, working stock. Would you trust that? I
wouldn't.
