HD Enclosure - "USB Devise not Recognized"

Oivay... this should be easy, right? have multiple hard drives, tried them
all with this enclosure, replaced the enclosure and cables twice. When it's
plugged in and turned on it should be recognized by WinXP, but, instead get
"USB Devise not Recognized." Tried manufacture support, nada. Performed
windows update. Any thoughts or should I try a different manufacturer, this
is a Mad Dog Megavault.

Why not try a known, and trusted brand, such as the enclosure from Adaptec.
You DO get what you pay for:

USB only =

USB plus Firewire =

yes, I checked and no it doesn't show up only my original 4 (HD, DVD, CDRW, &
Disc reader)

Adaptec Corp bends over backwards to maintain a good corporate image. Their
products and service have never let me down.

To complete the process of elimination, you should try the
problem enclosure on a different PC too.

It may be the jumper on the HDD. Try every setting listed by the
manufacturer of the HDD. With one enclosure I used, "master" meant no
jumper. With the same HDD in another enclosure, "master" meant one jumper
as specified by the drive manufacturer.

Why you advise to pay through the nose for a USB enclosure simply because
that is what you did is simply irresponsible. All my external HDD
enclosures have been purchased through Ebay and are of the 'el cheapo'
variety and I have yet to have a problem. Having said that I do not suggest
that problems do not occur with the 'el cheapo' enclosures in the same way
that problems sometimes occur with the far more expensive 'name brand'
enclosures.

If you want to pay 90% of the price for the name on the box, that is your
business, but under the guise of an expert, it is improper to suggest or
imply, either directly or indirectly, that is the sensible way to go.

I have had many instances where I have transferred the drive from one of
your "el cheapo" boxes to an Adaptec box, and have never heard from the
customer again.

I refuse to supply what I consider as crap. It will come back to bite ME! If
people want to buy one themselves, that is their prerogative. I will likely
get their money later.

Your anecdote proves nothing other than you no doubt make more money from
your customer by providing expensive equipment. The probability is that if
the enclosure failed, which I respectfully doubt, transfering the drive to
another el cheapo enclosure would have been equally effective other than you
profit would have been less. Perhaps that is the key :-). Branded
components do not equate to quality but do equate to inflated prices.

The fact is, branded, and tested, components equate to fewer call backs, and
less "loss of profit", for me. No computer tech wants to spend 1/2 - 1 hour
trouble shooting a problem caused by a piece of hardware that he made $5.00
on.

I also supply only Antec power supplies in the computers I build. They cost
about 4 times what I could supply "el cheapo" power supplies for. But I
seldom have problems with these quality products either.

It's unclear if you are using an external power supply or expecting the
USB to supply power? This is the kind of behavior I experience even
with notebook drives when the available USB power is too low (as is the
case with some laptops). I always use external power for desktop drive
enclosures.

This worked for me and you may have some success if you are able to
adapt the following to your particular situation:

1. Install as described in the instructions.

2. Find the device in your system's hardware controls.

3. Open the properties, locate and check the box labeled "Removable
Device."
