If on a primary controller is hooked HD as a master and an optical drive as
a slave, will the optical drive slow down HD speed?

Nope. The worst that can happen is that the slower seek on the
optical drive can suspend ops on the HD while the optical seeks.
 
Yes, that's called slowing down...Besides, in my practice I've always
tried to keep HD and Optical Drives on separate Physical channels,
most of the time you're looking for data to go from HD to OP, or OP
to HD, or HD to HD, but ALMOST never OP to OP

So why have HD stop writing last chunk to wait for OP to find next,
c'mon we want multi tasking right?
