HD Camcorder - HDMI port on Laptop ?

Jason

I recently bought a HD Camcorder. I bought Pinnacle Studio Ultimate to edit
my film. I am able to connect my camcorder to my laptop using USB, but the
software doesn't recognize my camera. It says I need to use Firewire or 1394
port. When I hook my camera up with HDMI, the camera and computer do not
recognize each other. I know the HDMI works, because I've used it for my TV.
I am not sure what the Firewire port is, or if my laptop has on?
I much rather use my HDMI port. Is there a way I can get my computer to
recognize devices hooked up through HDMI ? I am using Windows Vista.

Colin,
Are you saying hat most of the current generation of Laptops have Firewire
ports so the OP's laptop may have one. If yes then Jason needs to consult
his Laptops user manual for details.

That is what I am saying and yes he should check his setup sheet since that
is where he should see an explanation of all the buttons and ports. You
know, the one with all views of the computer (sides, top, bottom). :)

The HDMI port on your computer is an OUT port, not an IN port. Just as you
cannot connect an HDMI cable from one DVD player to another, you cannot hook
your camera up to the computer using this port.

As others have suggested, you need to check your computer/manual/support
site to see if you have a firewire port to connect the camera to.

Thanks everyone for replying to my question. I gave all of you a (yes)
helpful feedback. Ok. My computer does not have a firewire port. Thanks for
clearing up that my HDMI port on my laptop does not recieve.
I do have a SD disk space on my laptop, and my camera takes one too. Maybe
that will work, sense the USB will not.....

Is it difficult to add a 1394 port to laptop?

You should be able to add a firewire card. See my other reply.

It almost certainly will, though whether your computer can read the video
data on the chip may be a different issue depending on how it's encoded and
stored.

I am unsure if I have an expresscard. My slots say: SD/MMC/MS/XD...
Thanks for taking the time to help me with this issue Colin.
Jason

I am unsure of the quality. I really hate to use the card. My camera uses (i
know) an HSD... and my computer only takes SD. I don't know if the camera
also uses SD... plus it wont save much info... The quality may not be as good
either. I really need to hook my camera up to my computer. There must be some
way!

The HDMI port is for a Monitor type device, and will not allow the Camcorder
to dump files onto the computer ..

You'll have to use the FireWire or if u have USB to use that to dump the
files.

What I do with my CC is add the USB (on mine) then when it's connected, I
just copy the X.VRO file onto my folder on computer..

Rename the movie file to the subject then make my movie from that .. You get
the original movie that way and of course you might need to edit, cut,
etcc..

Hopes this helps...

For one, I'd say purchase an add-on card for your laptop that plugs into the
card slot and provides a FireWire port. For example, Sabrent makes a
Cardbus (PCMCIA) card that plugs into your laptop and provides two 1394
FireWire ports.

I checked out the specs. My computer is Gateway P-6822.
It says I have expansion slot : ExpressCard/54
So this means I can get my firewire???
Also, Is this a card that slides into the side of my laptop, or
must I place it "inside"?
Jason

That sucks about the HDMI port. Wouldn't it be nice if it worked both ways?
As far as copying my CC files onto the laptop with USB... Are you using a
program for that? The program I've tried to use will not recognize a USB.
Must have firewire (which I beleive I can now add through an ExpressCard/54).
But out of curiousity, if I needed to dump my CC files onto my computer- how
exactly did you do that, and once the files are there, can they be opened
with a film editing software?
Thanks
