HD bad clusters

I got a 40gig Western Digital HD that has some bad
clusters, and coz of that, prevents my puter from booting
up, freezes while botting up, coz talks too long or does
a scan disk which never ends. Can i do a fdisk or
something that like to resize the HD and not use the bad
clusters. Is that possible? can fdisk do it, or another
program recommended ?

Hello

You can reformat the drive and see if that would help any
but make sure that you back up your important Data first
and yes you can re-fdisk the drive

Modern hard drives have spare clusters that the drive firmware
automatically substitutes for any bad clusters. So if your hard drive
is reporting bad clusters then that means that all of the available
spares have already been used up.

You should go to www.westerndigital.com and download their free
diagnostic utility and run it to check out the hard drive.

As a general rule when hard drives start to report bad clusters this
is a warning of impending doom and you should take immediate action to
replace the drive before it joins the dearly departed.

If the bad clusters were a one-time event, a format might do the trick. But
of the number of bad clusters keeps growing, you might as well start
shopping for a new drive.
