Any idea why my harddisc drive is very active and has allways been that.? It
is mainly when I don't use the PC and it should be idle - I guess that the
search indexer doesn't use so much capacity.

Thanks

Could be almost anything. Hard drive defragging, indexing, antivirus
scanning your hard drive when it's idle, lots of possibilities.

Indexing is usually working 99% of the time .

HAve tried to disable windows search entirwly without any changes in HD
activity. The HD ticks like a second hand on a watch - theres a read or
write on the HD once every second :( and so it has been for 2 years now -
I'm afraid my HD will be very worn in a short time.

Thanks for any suggesiton

Alt-Ctrl-Del
Task Manager
Processes
Left click Memory to see what is taking up memory.
May tell you what is running.

Have you had a look in Resource Monitor ?
Task Manager
Performance
Resource Monitor
Select the Disk drop-down menu, you can double-click the Read and Write
headers to sort into an ascending/descending display. If the disk is
active
every second something should show up here.

I can see the files written or read to but I can't see the one that causes
the "per second disc activity". The Read and Write columbs shows B/mins so
if the read or write activity is very stable it is not possible to see any
changes and therefore it is not posible to locate the problem. Is it posible
to change any settings in the resource monitor or is the a disc log file
that I can view?

Thanks

I have Symantec Anti-Virus, which automatically starts scanning for
viruses and cookies whenever the PC has been idle for more than 10
minutes. And it really starts working that CPU--I can watch the temp
rising on my SpeedFan gauge.

No Offense Intended:
I think Symantec is a resource hog.
I am going with Windows Security Essentials.

Good luck finding it. I've analyzed this in both XP and Vista on
multiple systems. The "once a second" HD access does NOT show up in
Process Explorer. According to windows, there is no I/O activity.

My only conclusion is that there is some activity on the I/O bus that
is not recorded by software. Keep in mind that Windows doesn't flash
that LED, the hardware does at a lower level. Another thought is that
it might be the CD drive being checked for insertion ... that might
not show as read/write I/O in the software since often is no CD and no
actual data being read or written without a CD in there, but the
hardware might record the traffic and flash the LED.

I think I give up - have tried for so many days and hours and there is still
both the per second activity and sometimes a lot more in a system volume
information file. Anyone knows how it is with Windows 7 is that one able to
go into real idle mode regarding the HD?

Thanks

It seems like the System Volume information is causing some of the heavy
load on my HD - does anyone else have the same problem with th HD load or is
it only me?

Thanks
