Can someone still recall when is the effective date that all the HD
manufacturers start to change their product warranty period from 3 years
to 1 year ?
Seems to be a trick question since "all" the HD manufacturers did not change
to 1yr warranty periods. And many of them only changed the period on some of
their drives. You can go and buy a Maxtor drive with either a 3 or 5 year
warranty right now if you care to. Same with Western Digital. Same with
Seagate. Probably same with every other manufacturer which wants to be
competitive. This is not to say that EVERY drive is covered by the longer
warranty but SOME of them are. You must expect that if you buy the cheapest
drive offered that they are cutting corners somewhere and shortening the
warranty period is one easy way for them to do it. And the shorter warranty
period does not even mean that the drive is necessarily of lower quality --
just that the manufacturer is hedging their bet and knows that virtually
none will fail within the shorter period and will cost them nothing extra.
