I have a huge problem with my computer. I have a Compaq
Presario 1700T laptop with a Pentium III 800 Mhz processer,
256 MB of ram, and Windows 2000 professional. I use it
to play games such as Age of Empires II, Flight Simulator
2000, and to use dial-up internet on. The computer is
networked with a windows 98 computer for head-to-head
gaming. When I try to launch windows help, the computer
crashes to the desktop if I'm lucky, and if I'm not lucky,
it doesen't show any icons or the start menu. It does
still show the wallpaper, however (I don't use Active
Desktop). The same thing happens if I try to launch
Earthlink Totalaccess 2003 (windows 2000 compatible),
Add-Remove Programs, Find Files or Folders, or Windows
Media Player. Also, when I use Internet Explorer 6 or
RealOne player, it crashes to desktop without warning
randomly, so I have to use Netscape Navigator to browse the
web, and Dial-Up Networking to establish a connection to
the Internet. Even Dial-Up Networking is not immune to
problems, when connecting to the Internet, it doesn't show
a status box, and only shows on the taskbar. I have tried
the "repair" function of Windows setup, and it fixes the
problem until I start any external application such as Age
of Empires II or Flight Simulator. After I launch an
application, it is back to the old problems.
I would be very grateful if someone would give me a
solution to these problems.
