having cdrom problems in XP

My HP Pavillion laptop w/Windows XP will NOT EVEN
recognize that it has a CD ROM drive.
It does even appear in the "my computer" folder.

I have no idea what's wrong, it has worked fine before.
What can I do?
 
Hello,

Was there anything that happened from the time it did work to the time that
it didn't, or one day the cd drive was just gone?
