Description: I boot IE. I go to any web page. I click on any link. Sometimes, I decide to go completely to a different website. The new site/page attaches to the old address and of course is not found.
Another example. I go to Ebay. I browse auctions. I click on an auction I am interested in. I get "Thanks for Looking" instead of the page. This is a .gif file that is found on many auction pages near the bottom of the page, by the counter from Andale. Reload and I still get the same page--wrong page.
Another example. I go to Google.com. I search and get a page of links. I click on a link and instead of going to the link, I get the link page name attached to http://www.google.com/***, the *** being the other link. Of course, the page is not found.
These are only examples. I have the problem every single time I'm on Ebay and Google. I have it on most other sites, too. I usually can get the first few pages OK then it starts acting up. In order to get to the page I'm looking for (which seems to be OK in the address window, but not visibly), I have to copy the address from the window, go out of IE, then reboot it, and paste the address back into the window. I hate this!

So, how do I fix it? What is the bug? I have cleaned and cleaned with Spybot Search and Destroy, Secure Clean, and Ad-aware 6.0. Help!

Check your system for "hijackware":

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

It may be hijackware.

Or you may not have been to Windows Update in a l o n g time, Conz:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827667

Last weeks MS04-004/Feb-04 Cumulative Patch for IE includes the fixes
mentioned in Q827667. Get it and other updates you need at Windows Update.
To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before going to Windows Update and
when downloading/installing from any MS page.
