Have you had this problem with your scanner?

I just installed an EPSON Perfection 3170 Photo scanner.

I am frequently receiving error messages telling me that I do not have the
resources to run the scanner.

If I try to scan on "FullAuto", most of the time I will get an error message
stating that there are inadequate resources. Sometimes, however, it will
scan. If it does, it takes a very long time to open the "Save File" window.
Most of the time though, it won't scan.

If I scan on "Professional", I cannot get a "Save File" window at all. It
never appears. I have tried it on various resolutions, including 800 and
300 as well as the higher resolutions. Either "Save File" never appears or
I get a message about inadequate resources.

I am running a machine with Windows XP home. My processor is 2.6 MHz. My
RAM is 512 Mb. I have had no problems running other hardware, but I have
never run a scanner on this machine before.

I spoke to Epson technical support. He was difficult to follow. He repeated
something about resources, and opening Windows task manager while I am
trying to scan and see what is using resources, but couldn't instruct me any
further.

If I open Windows Task Manager now, without the scanner, I have one
Application running (the one I am writing this message on). I have 38
processes running and my CPU usage is 1%. "Performance" states that my
physical memory has 289,000 K available. I have not had any problem running
anything else on this computer.

I am very disappointed with my experience.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions? I would like to be able to operate my
new scanner.

Do you have the latest versions of your video driver, your USB port driver
and of EpsonScan for the 3170 (Epson's site)? You might try a complete
uninstall of the Epson software before reinstalling it. Go to the
www.newsoftinc.com site (they wrote the software) for the registry cleaning
tools and then start from a clean slate.

I have not updated any drivers since I bought the computer nine months ago.

Epson told me the scanner shipped with the latest software.

I did uninstall and reinstall the scanner software without any improvement
in function.

They always tell you it's got the latest software. They being any
hardware manufacturer you can name. Go to the Epson site and compare
version numbers. Bet your's is earlier than the one on the site.

It may have something to do with your virtual memory settings on the
computer.

I'll check my software version number and see if there's anything more
recent on the Epson website.

How do I look into my virtual memory settings? How do I know if I have to
change them (I'm not even sure what virtual memory is)?

There's no version number that I can find on the software, so I can't tell
if downloading software from the Epson site will give me anything better
than what I have.

Find the .exe file for the software. Right click it and click on
properties. You can find the version number that way.

Epson Scan ... look in the lower right corner of the "splash screen" when the program is
loading ... or take Hecate's advice and use Windows Explorer ... right-click on the EXE
file and choose 'Properties.'

Epson's web site has a download area, and you will find the last two versions available
for download. The USA site is

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportIndex.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes

The Perfection 3170 Photo 'Support' page is
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=25021&info
Type=Overview

The first item is 'Drivers and Downloads' ... Windows is
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=25021&prod
oid=35836301&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows

Where you will find downloads for versions 2.32A and 1.25A

The website you listed gives this driver available for download: TWAIN
Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.32A
Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98
epson11167.exe - 9.1MB - posted on 08/02/04

That's certainly a very recent date.

How do I tell what program to remove and replace with this. There are
multiple folders that the scanner installation CD produced and most have
multiple items contained within. I'm just not sure which one this "TWAIN
Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v2.32A" replaces.

If I find what I replace, do I just delete the old one and put this in its
place?

I'm not sure what to do.

Thank you.

FIRST:
Find out what version is currently installed on your computer.

NEXT:
Everything else depends on the step above.

Read the installation instructions that Epson provide. In most cases,
but not all, installation can be "over the top" of the current
installation. In other words, you download what is usually an exe file
to your hard disk, then (double) click it and let it install.

Try it on the USB 1.1 port instead of the USB 2.0 port

Why not try this?, there's reports yer model of scanner operates very
slowly on the USB 2.0 port ... I would try it ... not that I would expect
anything, but u never know.

Thanks, I'll try going through the help file (no printed manual is supplied)
next chance I get.

NEVER delete folders to remove programs, always use the Control
Panel/Add Remove Programs.
Also check you Temp Folders (%System_root%\Documents and
settings\%your account name%\Local settings\Temp, this is a hidden
folder so you will have to enable it in Folder Options. If this is
full then you will have problems scanning.
Try the scanner on another computer, if it fails with the same errors
then expect a scanner fault.
Yes try it in USB 1.1 port see if the situation improves.

Try the above ONE AT A TIME and test between.
