I bought a computer with xp home on it. I tried several
times to put pro on it. After many attempts I got it
installed but then I had to use my recovery partision on
my hard drive. Now I am back to where I started from,
tring to install pro. Every time the install crashes and
I have to start from scrach. Is it because it thinks both
are on the same partiision?

When upgrading Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional,
you need a "retail upgrade version" of Windows XP Professional. You also
need to select the default "Upgrade" option during setup and not the optional
"New Installation". Make sure to uninstall any antivirus program first, then
physically disconnect all peripheral hardware devices, except your monitor,
keyboard and mouse.
