have to 'repair' connection each time I start up

I'm having an odd Internet problem: When I start up, I
have no Internet connection: no Web, no email. When I go
to Network Connections, right click on Local Area
Connection and hit Repair, it then works. But then next
time I start up again, I have the same problem and have
to "Repair" it again. What's going on?

I'm operating XP Home, and I have a cable modem
connection (time warner RoadRunner). I connect through a
router; my roommate's computer, which also connects
through the router, is having no connection problems.

I don't know if this is a clue, but I've noticed
something else since I've had this problem: My computer
suddenly takes a REALLY long time to start up. It gets to
the point where my desktop is showing, and a couple of my
system tray icons are showing, and then gets stuck for a
minute or two. Oddly enough, the windows start-up sound
doesn't even happen until after this time. Then the last
couple system tray items show up (Norton Antivirus and
Sygate Personal Firewall), and I'm fully started up.

Except that I can't get to the Internet. As I've
mentioned.

Can anyone help?

i would first start by doing a virus up date and a full
scan. Then also downloading some spyware removal and
running that.

OK, I updated my virus definitions through NAV and ran a full scan. Nothing
nasty found. I also ran Ad-Aware, which I run every day. Nothing found,
other than a few relatively harmless little cookies.

Anyway, the problem persists. What now?

By the way -- I don't know if this is relevant -- but I'm now finding that
my computer is reacting very slowly when I try to do certain things, like
open a program or even open a drop-down menu.

Help?

For what it is worth, I'm having the same problem in XP.
I've scanned for spyware and I'm clean of viruses. I
believe the problem is related to Norton AV (which I've
uninstalled) or to an MS patch. I haven't been able to
come up with a better idea.

Did this just start happening to you? For me, the problem started suddenly
on Thursday morning. I've talked to a tech person at Dell, and he just
walked me through a lot of stuff to try to make my computer speed up
(defragmenting, deleting files, etc.). Didn't really help.

I also disabled all my start-up items (including NAV), restarted, and the
problem was still there. Hmph.

I noticed something else: If I wait about 10 minutes after starting up, my
Internet connection kicks in.

I'll be calling Dell back today. If you have any more insight, let me know.
