Hi Folks,
After much fun and games I have upgraded a fairly old laptop from Win 98SE
to XP and eventually managed to re-install Norton Internet Security 2004.
However, I have now noticed that I cannot enter a web address simply as
"www.domainname.whatever" and now I have to enter it as
"http://www.domainname.whatever"

Any ideas please from anyone much appreciated!
Thanks.

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"

Click Start | Run and type
control inetcpl.cpl
Select Content tab, and click AutoComplete button
In the Use AutoComplete for section, put a checkmark near Web addresses
Click OK, OK to close the dialog.

Equivalent registry value for this setting

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete

Value named: AutoSuggest of type REG_SZ
Possible value-data: yes | no

You may have to Restart the computer.

Hi Again Zee,
Thanks again! Unfortunately still no joy and I've double checked I edited
the registry OK. So, still the same - enter "www.nnnnn.co.uk" or whatever in
the address bar and hit <enter> and nothing happens (except for highlighting
the address), add "http://" in front and hit <enter> and it goes straight to
the web address...!
Cheers!

Just curiosity, have you recently installed the .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 update?

A few of the same errors have been reported after that. Is that your case or nothing to do with it?

Hi Zee,
Don't think so....I have done all the Windows updates (it's XP Home by the
way) including SP2.

Yep, looking through the forum there seem to be several of us with the same
problem after upgrading so hopefully Microsoft will bring out a cure!
Hopefully soon!

I don't know if this is covered, but there are a whole bunch of updates
coming out Tuesday. Warning: This means the site might be slow.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the tip off. I sincerely hope so as for me (as I;m sure it is for
others on this forum and elsewhere) it is highly frustrating!
Many thanks.

Hi Again Frank,
Windows Explorer is also running like a dog and take a few minutes to
'resolve' when you first try and look in a folder which affects loads of
other software as well.
Is this the same issue do you know or something else? This more than doubles
the issue IMHO!

Many thanks.

Leigh

Have installed all 10 updates without any change in performance in IE6 or
Windows Explorer. Both still takes minutes to open unless told in detail
where to go.
