Evelyn

I hope someone can help me. Very recently I jimmied up my
Open file folder command so that when I double click on a
file folder, a window pops up. It has a black background
and the file path says it is C:WINDOWS\system\ykrp.com

When I go to Start, Control Panel, Appearance & Themes,
Folder Options, File Types, and choose File Folder, then
Advanced and click on Open (or any other option) both the
Edit and Remove buttons are grayed out so I cannot remove
this current open command.

Does anyone know how to get this back to where double
clicking on a file folder will simply open it? All
individual file folder settings have "Double click to
open" option chosen.

Would greatly, greatly appreciate help. The only way I
can open a file folder is to right click and choose
explore! I hate it!

Thanks,

Evelyn

Evelyn,

Run a full system virus scan, as the filename ykrp.com is suspicious. Also, make sure you have the updated virus definitions. Once scanning is done, fix the folder association in the registry, using the REG file available at:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Hi Ramesh,

Thanks for a very prompt reply. I have run virus
checkers, including my own Norton, and online
BitDefender, Panda, and Trend Micro. Nothing.

I have now done what you suggested and it doesn't work
either. All Edit and Remove options are still grayed out.

Any further suggestions?

Evelyn

Assuming that you've already applied the Folder association fix and the problem persist:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder

Export this key and post the contents here.

Hi Ramesh,

I am so grateful to you for helping me.

Here it is:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.Folder]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.Folder\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

However, I ignorantly exported the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
without \Folder, opened it into Word (4469 pages!!!!) and
did a Find in it for the word ykrp and here is what I
found:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\system\\ykrp.com %1"
I'm betting this is what I need to delete or change.

Please, please tell me it's easy and how to do it!

Thanks!

Evelyn,

Yes. Delete this entire key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\open]
'Open' is not required for 'HKCR\Directory'. HKCR\Folder will contain a 'Open' command anyway.

Step 2:
Once done, navigate to this key exactly:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
In the right-pane, double-click (default) and type "none" as the value (without quotes)

-or-

Type REGSVR32 /i SHELL32 in the RUN box.

As for a file called ykrp.com, yes there is one. I
searched the web for info on ykrp and could find none.

It says it's an MS-DOS application, Date Modified on
12/2/03 which is before I bought the computer (new, two
weeks ago).

Should I delete it?
