Hi,

How do I know if my computer has a CD-ROM burner or a DVD burner?

I've tried searching the net for the model number given in Device Manager
but to no avail. Can Windows XP tell me what type of optical drive burner is
fitted. My Computer says it's a CD-RW Drive. If I had a DVD burner, would it
say 'DVD Drive'.

Is it that simple?

Many thanks.

Thanks JS,

Unfortunately, my laptop media tray doesn't say very much.
Can Windows tell me (reliably) what sort of drive is fitted?

All the DVD drives (DVD-R and DVD-RW) on my PC(s) have the letters DVD on
the media tray.

look at the faceplate on the optical device , it will say CDRom , CDRW ,
DVDRom or DVDRW

CDRW = rewritable CD
DVDRW = rewritable DVD

Try this:
Click on Start/Control Panel
Double Click on the System Icon then select the Hardware tab and click on
the Device Manager button.
In the Device Manager window expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives entry. You should
your CD or DVD drive listed here.
You will know if it's a DVD by right clicking and selecting the Properties
option, if after doing so you see a tab labeled DVD Region then you know for
sure it's a DVD.

You can also right click on the My Computer Icon, select Manager and get to
Device Manager.

DVD drives will have a DVD Region tab in Properties, whether or not they are
a recorder.

Open Device Manager....
Start | Run | Type: devmgmt.msc | Click OK |
Click the [+] next to DVD/CD-ROM drives | Double click
on the drive

The drive itself may even be listed with DVD in its name.

Hey Step,

To check what type of optical drive you have you can simply download belarc
advisor and install it and it will tell you all about your computers hardware
and software. To get it go here..

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Click the download link on the page and run it. Under Drives it should tell
you your hard drives first then your optical drives then other removable
drives. It will tell you the manufacturer and then what type of drive it
is(what you're looking for) and the model number which you can look up to
find out what you have as well. Good Luck.

As I thought more about your question I am thinking that you are unsure
because you may have a drive that can read and write cd's and can play dvd's
in which case you would have what's called a combo drive but it is not
capable to write dvd's. Just FYI.
