Lately I have noticed that more and more people in these newsgroups reply
with pointers to some website that may or may not have the relevant answer
to the original question instead of give the answer in few of their own
words. It makes me very suspicious as to the actual knowledge that these
people have in regards to the question posed. Are the just using a search
engine to find these websites with out knowing or understanding the
question?
If you going to point to some website please do it as a last resort and
after you at least attempt to answer the question.

why?

If the website has the answer, posters should help us to help them by going
to the website. Hand-holding can be time-consuming, and we try to give the
poster some credit for initiative. The ones who want an answer and cannot
use the resource can post back and get hand-holding if they really need it.
Of course, some helpers here rely on cut-and-paste for most of the answers
they give. This may or may not be helpful.

Hi Pavel
If you going to point to some website please do it as a last resort and
after you at least attempt to answer the question.

Hmm, I don't agree.

If other people have found a good solution and even have bothered to
describe it 'somewhere', then that is an excellent help to the one who
needs is.

Here the answer is often very short and might miss important warnings
and points. Those sites often also lists the warnings and mistakes the
user has done and experienced.

Are the sites legitimate, well it is like the answers here are the
legitimate?? you read and evaluate --- and then you decide if it seems
legitimate.

In my case please keep pointing to the sites with the required help.

Regards Leif.

We could type a whole bunch of stuff re. virtual memory but Alex Nichol
produced a webpage that said it all.. http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.php

We could type a whole bunch of stuff re. SP2, but Jupiter Jones produced a
webpage that said it all.. http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

And three authors validating SP2..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/winxpsp2.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/features.mspx

http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1724107,00.asp

We could type a whole bunch of stuff re. repair, clean and upgrade installs
of XP, but Michael Stevens produced a webpage that said it all..
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com

Posters can bookmark these and return to them.. and its like asking where
the science museum is.. you point them in a direction, but do you have to
have knowledge of every exhibit?..

Since most of what I know has been picked up at Hardware site Forums,
books, magazines and newsgroups and just
experimenting and building my own systems I do not have a rounded
computer education. I do know that if it were not
for sites like Doug, Kelly's, Michael's, Anandtech, HardOcp,
ArsTechnica, PCPer and a host of others this stuff would still be a mystery
to me. So I have learned over the years that a link to a Review of a piece
of hardware I'm interested in or
a link to a forum that's discussing the very problem I'm having is worth
quite alot in time and aggravation saved. And at 65
my memory and brain are not that sharp so thank the Lord for Broadband.
Sometimes I get stuck on giving up old ideas such as mine on Virtual Memory
Lol, I'm still determined to manage my own though after listening to
overwelming evidence to the contrary I'm letting XP finally do it. So keep
the great links coming. And thanks Mike, I didnt have that one on SP2 by
Jupiter Jones.

I don't really care where the answer to my problem comes from. If the MVP's
or another person has the answer to my question whether it be a direct type
written essay as to what I did wrong or what my machine did or a short and
quick webpage that answers and fixes my problem. Just remember I or you came
HERE asking a question and looking for answers.
In my opinion and long time learning ... DON'T bite the hand that feeds you.
If it's a fix for your problem what difference does it make? Besides I've
bookmarked alot of great sites, up until the kind MVP's posted them, I
didn't know about before.
Keep up the good work people. I DON'T CARE HOW YOU ANSWER MY PROBLEMS. If I
ask and you answer - enough said.
Brad
ps;
maybe if you bookmark the given sites you won't have to come back here and
bother these helpful people again!

Ok, i have gone to college and still am for pc tech. Guess what, our instructor who has a masters in everything to do with pcs, has to ,(yes) look things up in books and websites. Your lack of knowledge and ignorance is astounding! If you only knew how much there is to learn and remember, you wouldn't even post that comment. You go to a fine site like this with people trying to help YOU, and complain? Did you pay for your answer? no. If you think you're smart enough to question peoples' intelligence, then you should be smart enough to figure out something on your own and not have to ask.
