I am trying to use video with Windows Messenger 4.7
on Windows XP Home addition and the Audio/Video tuning
wizard crashes my PC when I try to use ATI TV Wonder
capture Video capture as camera source.

Has anyone used ATI TV Wonder VE with Messenger?

Greetings Don,

I haven't tried the TV Wonder VE in particular, but my Radeon 8500DV inputs work just fine
with Messenger -- I assume you have the latest drivers from http://www.ati.com?

As well, if you don't have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed (this patch is included),
you'll need to download and run this patch in order for this to work:

Jonathan, Thanks for the informatio. I have all the
available Windows XP patches (including DirectX 9.0b)
and the lastest drivers from ATI installed. I am using
a Radeon 9200 video card and a seperate TV Wonder VE
card. My computer supplier says to speck to ATI support.
ATI Supports says the card and drivers are working
properly and that the problem is with Windows Messenger.
I tried it with Messenger 4.7, 5.0 and 6.0. They all have
the same problem. That is when I run the Audio/Video
tuning wizard and select ATI TV Wonder Capture for
Camera and click next, my PC reboots. I also tried the
card in another PC runing XP and got the same problem.
Some said I would have to wait until next April for XP
Service pack 2 and DirectX update to do video conferencing
with Messenger. IS that true?

This has become very frustrating. I got a pile of junk
mail when I posted any earlier message with my email
address, but no helpfull suggetions.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Is it worth paying Microsoft support for help?

Hi Don,

The Tuning Wizard is essentially identical in each Messenger application, which is why it's
failing in both. What I'm curious about in this "reboot", is if something has been written
to the event log before it actually happens. You can view your Event Log by clicking Start,
then Run, type "eventvwr.msc" and click OK. Then click System in the Event Viewer, look for
Errors and double-click them to see the information they contain.

I don't know who's saying all will be fixed in Service Pack 2 or some DirectX update, because
at this point, I don't even think the exactly cause of the issue has been established (how
can you subscribe a cure if you don't know the cause?).

To be honest, I don't think Microsoft support could help you, unless there's some issue I'm
not aware of.

Jonathan, The only entry in the event log that I could
find was a Save Dump - Event ID: 1001
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000007f (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000,
0x00000000). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini100303-01.dmp.

I don't know wht this tells me. Maybe you have some
insight.

I tried it again and it did log a system error:
category (102)
Error code 0000007f, parameter1 00000000, parameter2
00000000, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 00000000.

But it still doen't help me. I believe that there is
a driver problem or configuration issue.
