I've only tried it with Mandrake 10.0

So far it's been... a strange experience. Took a few tries to get the
install to 'take hold'. Kept defaulting back to the drivers that shipped
with the distro. When I got the drivers to take, they ran OK - definitely a
huge improvement in 3d performance over the software acceleration from the
default drivers. Played Everquest through Wine but the performance was
definitely not as good as in Windows. Got the latest fglrx drivers and
tried to install and I'm back to the default drivers again magically. I'd
really like to get these things running so I can play Doom3 under Linux
(this box only has 98SE as a windows dual boot option, as I want to just
drop Windows entirely).

Lotsa friends have Geforce cards and great luck with their Linux drivers.
Hope ATI gets off their butts about these ASAP and delivers good drivers
with a better install. Has to have a good installer since they don't
provide source.

Thanks for the response. Indeed Nvidia would be a better choice here. (A
collegue proved it to me). I'm stuck with the card for now. I'll wait until
Suse says something on their web-site re fglrx and 9.2
The ATI Radeon 9800 does actually work quite well in 2D with the default
driver - even hooked to the screen with DVI in my case. (A R9200 refused to
to work..)

I got the latest fglrx installed from ATI's site. Had to install it about
10 times before it 'took' this time. All the 2D works great and the 3d
works good for simple things like tux racer and fglx_gears and things like
that. Even get decent performance. Got Doom3 for Linux working, but it
locks up after about 5 minutes or so (give or take a few minutes) every
time.
