Has anyone tried MS Visual Web Developer Express, yet?

I just went through the process of downloading VWDx, only to discover that
the program requires you, unlike FrontPage, to really understand coding to
make it work. I built a large website in FP without knowing any code but, I
couldn't get through the first exercise in VWDx that involved creating a page
with some basic controls.

Now I'm scared. Are all we do-it-yourselfers finished? Anybody got some
suggestions for an alternative product? What's Dreamweaver like?

You probably should be looking at Expression Web Designer.

The Future of FrontPage:

Microsoft Expression Newsgroups:
microsoft.public.expression.webdesigner
microsoft.public.expression.discussion
microsoft.public.expression.interactivedesigner

**Continued support for FrontPage 2003:

Currently, mainstream support will not be retired until 1-13-2009. Extended
support will not be retired until 1-14-2014.

Thanks, I'll try that. It's just that, according to MS's blurbs, it sounded
like VWDx was the right product for non-coders. Thank you again for the tip.
I really appreciate it!

I used FP for years before getting the Beta of EW.

I also tried VWD and found it harder to use than EW.

And Dreamweave is not anything at all like FP.

People keep saying that, but how much longer will it actually be for sale?

From what I understood, it is no longer being manufactured and will be
discontinued from sales in 3-4 months?

It won't be for sale after the new versions are released, unless you can
find it somewhere on the net.

Hi Tom!

1. Thank you for your reply; I tried to reply earlier but the system had a
problem and told me to come back later.

2. FYI - This is what MS says about VWDx in the "Future of Front Page"
section:

"Hobbyists and enthusiasts can also get Visual Web Developer 2005 Express
Edition which is a new, easy to use, and easy to learn development for
building Web sites."

Are they kidding? I wasted a couple of hours downloading, and trying to
understand a product only an engineer/geek (sorry!) could understand! Who
writes this stuff? Obviously, not anyone who's actually used the thing!

3. Anyways, thanks for the tip. I really do appreciate it!

Regards,
Mark

Thanks to you, too, Steve; I didn't see your reply before I thanked Tom. Just
had a look at Expression Web promos - sure doesn't give me the impression of
being non-geek friendly, but I'll give it a try. Regards, Mark

I have to agree. I am NOT a coder - I design websites and pages for our
company. VWD for me was too much coding and not enough website. I can do
simple coding and modify some things that I rip off from the internet, but I
do not have the time or the inclination to learn heavy VB, C#, javascript,
or whatever.

I find that EW is much better for what I do - it has all the ASP.NET stuff I
need, and the CSS interface is probably best of any program around. I don't
need to design heavy duty SQL applications - about the most complicated I
get is things like listings of PDF files and tech info, which I can do with
a simple asp.net/sql setup.

Troll? Isn't that what your mother raised?
