Has anyone experience with this freeware?

Please elaborate... Do you have knowledge or experience with them?
What do you base this opinion on?

Statistics, experience? Installation at minimum adds weight gain. Registry
entries, including new filetype keys. Sometimes the install tries to sneak
things into the sysdirectory. Once in a while seizes associations. Etc.

Best approach any time running an installer is to use a rollback strategy.
Keep a backup of the files in your sysdirectory and use something
like TUN [someone else will need to provide its URL] for the registry
rollback.

I do realize you were looking for anything specific about the software
you mentioned, but lieu of that, and better IMO, is just never trust
installers. Use them, because usually you got to, but protect yourself.

I install like thousands+ progs a year -- am not commenting from thin
air. But with registry tracked and sys files backed...even the nastiest&
buggiest installer can't sink this rig.

I would like to know if there are any adverse effects from installing
their proggies. The name *bot*productions makes me a bit leery, lol.

Hi jen

I ran both PSP Thumbnail Handler and IconViewer through Spychecker
http://www.spychecker.com/ and Tom Cat http://www.tom-cat.com/tomcat.html.
Neither of these sites list either of these programs as spyware. If you are
still concerned you could use a freeware program like SpywareGuard
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html to prevent you from
installing spybots.

Thank you very much:) What do you think of the previous comments on
these proggies?

Quite welcome! :)

Btw, whatever annoyances/bugs/calories might be awaiting in their
installer... One thing I can say nevertheless, is that their hearts
seem pure. Judging by <www.botproductions.com/main/index.html#sites>.
Guide to the constellations, Students' chemistry project on solar cells,
Midis of Vivaldi and Handel.... I definitely trust 'em to not be engaged
in anything so in contrast as sleazeware/spyware. :)

If I read them correctly, they said nothing about these programs
specifically, but commented on installers, which are everywhere.

Again, I believe the author of these comments said this specifically

Another site to check.

http://www.spyblocker-software.com/spyblocker/known.shtm

Also try googling or whatever on the (name OR vendor) AND (adware OR
.....). I like to search on the vendor as well as the product. Note
capital "OR" is important for Google but "AND" is assumed.

A simple Google example:

iconviewer ( adware OR spyware OR malware OR virus OR trojan OR worm
OR spies OR spy )

(Apologies if you are among the majority who are far more search
engine literate than I.)

Also check out pricelessware.org and acf security related threads for
discussion of firewalls, startup/trojan monitors (WinSonar,
WinPatrol), etc.

BTW, IconViewer has been a very popular download for a number of
years. It is also listed at quite a few major download sites. That
is no guarantee (especially for privacy), but a good indication that
it is not malicious.
