I have a friend whose pc is running XP home..its a Dell,
windows works fine he can open any program except my
computer, windows explorer, internet explorer or anything
to do with explorer. when you try to open any of these
all you get is the error reporting in xp saying that
there was an error...tried virus checking, no viruses,
tried repairing Windows same problem happens, tried
getting updates same thing, I have never seen anything
like this before. any shortcuts that the user has on his
desktop that are programs work great, any folder or file
on the desktop won't open and the error comes up..I am
stumped!!!

..

Thanks Katie, I felt that when i was troubleshooting the
pc that that was where it would lead, but you never want
to reformat and reinstall if you don't have to, so thanks
for confirming my fears!!! :)

Stop don't reformat and repair!!

I recently had a similar problem and multiple attempts to repair I finally noticed when looking at the detailed error message although it reported the failing Ie or explorer on the top left portion of the window it also always highlighted the same dll in the right hand corner

I my case it was tps108.dll, isearch the Microsoft website to no avail and the did general web search using Yahoo for tps108.dll. Take a look for yourself there are a number of sites identifying the root of the problem and how to resolve it

It worked for me

Best of Luck

Mark, Thank You!!!

here i was getting ready to blow away the partition in
setup when a thought occured to me to check the newsgroup
one more time before going ahead and i found your post
and checked it out. sure enough, tps108.dll was the
problem...used a program called toolbarcop and it had the
BHO listed so after deleting the file everything worked
well...so thanks a lot for helping

take care

John
