Has anyone discovered a way to do a major hardware upgrade
(i.e., mobo+processor+video, etc) on an existing XP system
without having to do a repair installation and then
reinstall all the service packs and fixes? I have found
that Casper XP is a slick program for migrating an xp
system to a new harddrive, but still looking for the magic
wand on the hardware upgrade. I know that protecting
intellectual rights is important, but it makes upgrading
the pits. I guess what they really want you to do is buy
a new computer with a new copy of windows and continue to
propagate the software vendors and system builders profit
margins.

Nuff said.

The necessity of a Repair Installation after a major upgrade has
nothing to do with protecting intellectual rights.
The Repair Installation is needed to properly detect the new hardware.
The Repair Installation would still be required even if Activation did
not exist.
With a major hardware change, a Repair Installation is the normal
approach.

Activation will be required because of the Repair Installation,
nothing more.
A Repair Installation normally also requires reinstallation of
updates.\

Usually a Repair install works (but not always).
Try using SYSPREP feature from the Deploy.cab on the XP CD
to ready XP installation and will force it to re-search for new
drivers after installing the new motherboard.
