Hardware problems

When I start to scan the C drive, it starts out by giving
a message of "Checking file allocation tables" then it
only checks some of the folders half way, and it keeps
giving me that message of "Checking file allocation
tables" but it doesn't complete the scan disk. What can I
do to get my C drive completely scanned?

Have you got an antivirus program by any chance. If so, these can cause this
kind of problem. I think I'm right in saying that you should be able to run
scandisk from safe mode.

Haven't got Xp but I'm assuming it's the same as all other versions. When
the PC is booting, keep pressing F8 and you should get a menu with an option
of starting in safe mode. If this doesn't work, look here :

Once in safe mode, just run scandisk as normal,
