My sister has a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop experiencing strange
Internet operation.

The thing is dog slow. She has a very fast cable system, excess of
10000 kbps. that typically runs at 200 kpbs or less. I disabled the
onboard nic and put in a replacement pci card. First connection hit
11500 kbps immediately afterwards dropped to under 400 kbps.

This is a direct connection without a router. Exact same results using
Linux or XP.

As a control test I connected my laptop and get routinely above 11500
kbps. That makes me believe the Dell likely has a motherboard that is
failing. Any other possibility?

where are you getting the speed results from?

what browers?

USB or RJ45 cables?

Hi,

On your sister's Dell, you might try to go into the Configuration ->
Advanced tab for the NIC, and try different settings for the
speed/duplex settings (or something equivalent to that). It's probably
set to Full Autonegotiation by default or something similar, but I've
run into situations where I had to specifically set, for example, "Force
10 full-duplex", etc.
