Hello,

I posted this in the Win98 newsgroup for opinions. I am hoping someone here can
help me to understand what is going on. I am NOT here to start any wars over
Win98.

The computer is a HP kayak XU 6/266. 128 Meg RAM. 4.2 Gig HD (SCSI). CD ROM
(IDE).

The computer has trouble every time it boots. It is missing msmouse.vxd. Then
vnetsup.vxd. Then Vnetbios.vxd. Then it looses the CD ROM when Windows trys to
load the drivers? CD worked fine to install several times.

I thought it was the power supply but the machine works fine in DOS, including
re-installing Win 98.

I wiped the drive and installed Win 98-same thing. I tried Win 98SE. On the last
restart it can no longer locate the CD ROM.

I pulled the memory a stick at a time to check the ram. I took a voltage meter
to the power plug for the hard drive to check the PS voltage. I can't imagine
the PS is the problem as it works fine installing Windows, several times.

It won't boot from the CD so I can't run memtest.. I have a new CD-RW here I
tried that wouldn't boot either. It will boot and run fine from a floppy. It
will boot fine into safe mode, when I had Win installed. Because it's an HP, I
don't have a spare PS to swap out.

Before I started playing with it I ran an online virus check. It found two files
that were infected. After fdisking the drive, and mbr, I can't imagine a virus
still being a problem. I have shut it off several times to install Win98 again.
I have formatted and fdisked the drive at least 3 times.

Update: It's been 5 dasy since I first posted my problem. One gentleman was kind
enough to make a few suggestions. PSU, memory, check the wall power and a UPS.

I have a PSU on it's way to swap out. In the mean time I have tried installing
Win98 several more time diff ways to no avail. Same results.

Then something funny happened. I installed Slackware 9.0. It boots and works
fine, including the graphical mode. My daughter has used this computer for at
least two years with Win98se on it.

I have given my daughter a faster computer so I no longer need Win98 on it for
her. I would really just like to understand what the heck is going on with this
system.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks in advance.

I don't profess to know what your problem is but a search on Google brought
up the following sites (and many others). They seem mainly to refer to Win
95 but I would imagine they will be correct for Win 98 as well.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the reply.

I was just wondering why Linux would appear to work and 2 diff versions of Win98
didn't seem to. Seems Win98se can't see the CD after it does it's final boot. I
put Win98se on it a couple of years ago and it just installed fine. No problems
at all.

I have a new PSU coming. I hope that will fix it. Otherwise I'll give to away
because it's not hardly worth anything.

I actually have Linux (Libranet) running on it now so I may just hang onto it
too. It seems to be working fine with that.

Steve
