hardware problem? 100mb link does not work, but 10mb works fine

Hi,

A computer started having network connectivity problems: when doing ping it
dropped packets, and couldn't connect to other servers or the internet.
I forced the NIC to work at 10mb and it works fine, however when I change it
back to auto-negotiation, 100-half or 100-full, it starts having problems
again.

What do you think? cable problems, switch problems, or busted NIC?

What kind of switch are you connecting to? Managed? Autosense enabled on the
switch ports? Is it a 100Mbps capable device? I personally don't like using
autosense if there are other options (although with some switches autosense
works better than locking down the speed/duplex setting on the client
itself).
Have you updated the NIC drivers? Tried another cable/different port on the
switch?
 
If it fails at any 100mbps rate I'd suspect a faulty NIC or faulty cabling.

The switch is 10/100 autosensing, and all the other computers have no
problem connecting to it at any speed/duplex setting. The computer was
working fine until a few days ago...
I went to the patch panel and patched it to a different port, also changed
the cable that goes from the NIC to the wall socket, and tried connecting
the NIC to a different wall socket, but it made no difference.

I updated the NIC drivers and even rolled them back to the version that came
with XP, but there was no difference either.

Like Rich said, I'm suspecting the NIC's to blame. Thank you very much for
all your help!
