Today I can't seem to format a blank disk on my NT 4 sp6 system's floppy
drive. And
every time I try to access a good disk on the a: drive I get the
following error message:

The volume does not contain a recognizable file system. Please make
sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that
the
volume is not corrupt.

I've tried formatting a new disk on another machine and then accessing
it on this computer but I still get the message. I don't have an extra
drive to swap out so I thought I'd check here first to see if this might
be caused by windows before I run to the store for a new drive.

It might well be the FDD, but you might also consider a bad floppy
cable. All of this assumes you have the correct parameters set in CMOS
for the drive.

was the floppy removed at any time? Is the compartment one of those that conceals the front of the floppy drive and supplies an
external button to activate the floppy release mechanism? check to make sure that the drive is positioned properly and the 'cases'
button isn't pressed hard up against the floppy drive button.

Sounds like a bad drive..

The computer's been sitting in the same spot for over a year and hasn't
moved (except for the occasional cleaning, but that's been about a month
ago). And it's just a regular floppy drive, not one of those that's
partially concealed by a case. I guess I'll break down and drive to a
computer store today, but I wanted to check first since it's about an
hour drive each way for me. (never move out into the country if you
need computer parts fast!!)
