XP Home, SP 2,

used to be in the system tray an icon telling me that plug and play hardware
was installed or connected usually via USB port or hub.

That icon has stopped showing itself, about three days now,

and now before I unplug a device I must go to Device Manager and disable the
device in effect manually.

How can I get the icon back to disable plug and play devices?

Thank you,
Robert

Hi Robert,

Are you referring to the Balloon Tips, or the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. Both of them appear in the Notification area. (aka "System Tray".)

To re-enable balloon tips, delete the "EnableBalloonTips" value in the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

For more information, check this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307729
(That article tells how to *disable* balloon tips. So you need to follow the reverse of what the article says, in order to re-enable the balloop tips.)

Hi Robert,

Next time you want to unplug something, click "start, run" and type the
following:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This will bring up the "Safely remove Hardware" dialogue. After you've
unplugged the device, you should notice the icon has come back.

Alternatively (and I like this better), you could create a shortcut with the
same command and put it (say) in your start menu.

HTH Tony.

Click the left pointing arrow next to the tray icons.

Thank you,

this works

"RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll"

Robert

Or "CONTROL HOTPLUG.DLL"
