Hardware monitor found error

Upon rebooting Win XP, this message has started to come up. I'm then given
the option to F1 and continue or DEL to enter setup. I am not knowledgable
enough to fool around with settings, but I have looked and didn't see
anything alarming - but what do I know.

Now, I didn't know if it meant there is some monitor that checks all my
hardware for errors on booting up - or did it mean my monitor was going bad.
It's not a very clear message.

I have had indications that my monitor IS going out on me. It's quite old -
maybe 7 or 8 years, so it's been a good workhorse. But, whenever I power off
the monitor and power back on, it's started to make this rapid tapping noise.
There were some earlier anomalies that haven't appeared for a while - but, I
figured it was time for it to be on it's way out anyway.

I called the place that put together my computer and they said it's my
monitor. Then I talked to someone at CompUSA and they said they'd never
heard of XP displaying a message about a hardware error.

Does anyone know about his message?

There are hardware monitors and, well, there are "hardware
monitors", including a copyrighted program of the same name.
When does the message show up? During or right after POST?
After Windows XP loads and starts? And it might help to know
the make of the motherboard and the bios since these provide
clues of when the detection might occur. And the monitor, if
it has OSD capability of reporting video card issues and wrong
settings.

Best guess: The bios has detected and is reporting on a piece
of hardware. It would be something minor if Windows loads, such
a failing chassis fan, motherboard temp above threshold setting,
etc. Any errors shown in Device Manager?

The message shows up before Windows loads - I'm given the option to continue
by pressing F1. When I do this, Windows loads successfully.

I'd be surprised if a fan is failing since I just got a new case in March.
However, my motherboard is about 5 years old. Could it be a sign that the
motherboard is going?

I checked device manager and there were no errors for anything there. My
motherboard is Asus P3V4X/533-U. I have no idea about the bios. Where would
I find that?

What does OSD mean?

Thanks for you help!

I just rebooted and was going to look in the bios info, but this time the
message did not come up, which is unusual. Wouldn't you know. I'll try
rebooting a little later and see if it comes up. I read something that
indicated you can go in there and check your motherboard temp? I'm no expert
at navigating around there, so I can just poke around. Will let you know.

When looking around inside the computer case, always take
care. For a 5-year old motherboard, the suspicion points to
the CMOS battery. It is usually due for replacement at about
this time, and it can start spinning off erroneous readings.
Get out the motherboard manual. The ASUS manuals are quite
thorough. Replacing the CMOS battery usually means re-doing
the bios settings...so read up on this as well.

And while inside the computer, it pays to do a little some
house-keeping chores, such as gently vacuuming out the dust
and link that has accumulated, unclogging heatsinks, fans,
etc.

(BTW, OSD = On-Screen Display.)

Ok, thanks. Will check these things out and will be careful. Replacing
my motherboard is actually the next hardware purchase on my list.
